SYMPOSIUM ON
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
|
Aloha to all of you who connected with us at the First Annual Symposium on Health and Wellness held at the Convention Center in May. Liza and Kathy shared a Reiki and Massage booth with Reiki practitioner Joyce Winough, and we were all busy the whole time! We met so many incredible people and felt revitalized afterwards despite putting in some long days.
The highlight of the experience for us was experiencing the Hawaiian blessing during the opening ceremony. A kahuna named Melia (sp?) chanted and gave a very special blessing to all present. She told us that all of us doing healing work in Hawaii have spent lifetimes here prior, regardless of whether we were born here. She also said it doesn't matter if the healing you practice is Western or Eastern, modern or ancient, licensed or simply passed from teacher to student.
She called us children of the rainbow, and said we are here now to reestablish Hawaii as the center of healing for the planet, as it was in ancient times. Then she greeted each of us personally, gifting us with Hawaiian salt. We were then invited to play a sacred drum she had been given that very day, to put our healing energy into it with our hands. We were in tears the whole time we were in her presence.
Thank you to Melia, and to RuthE Matsumoto for creating this powerful event! We would like to gift all of you present at the symposium with a $5 discount off any session of massage therapy, Reiki or craniosacral therapy. Give us a call!

REIKI MOVIE NIGHT
|
Reiki is a system of natural healing which was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800's by a man named Mikao Usui. After Usui's death, Reiki was held by Chijuro Hayashi, and then by a woman from Kauai, Hawaii named Hawayo Takata.
Takata's granddaughter, Phyllis Furumoto is now the Lineage Bearer of the Usui System of Reiki Healing.
Since Takata's death in 1980, Reiki has spread very quickly throughout the globe, and now exists in many different forms. Many people who have Reiki are not familiar with the System as practiced and taught by Takata and her forebears.
Come watch a video of Phyllis Furumoto and Paul Mitchell, Head of the Discipline describe the four aspects and nine elements of the formal practice of the Usui System of Reiki. If you have not yet experienced Reiki, willing hands will give you a sample as you watch!

KATHY'S STORY: PART 5
|
How I Lowered My Cholesterol
I knew it was possible to lower cholesterol without the use of prescription drugs, and when my cholesterol level hit 296 last November, it was time to take action. I have a family history of high cholesterol and have been testing in the 200 range for quite sometime. Of course I knew that it should be lower, but I didn't worry so much about it because I am woman and figured the hormones would protect me from any harmful damage (actually, now I know heart disease is still the number one killer of women!).
As I get older I am more conscientious about my health. I want to be on this planet for a while longer and taking better care of my body must be a priority. High cholesterol is dangerous to your body, especially your heart and arteries. Last year I saw my cholesterol starting to go up higher and higher. I attribute some of that to being perimenopausal and some to going to the mainland on vacation. When it hit 296, I went into a frenzy, my anxiety attacks came back and I knew it was time to do something. I will talk more about the perimenopausal stuff in another issue.
I quickly searched in the cob webs of my mind and remembered there are a lot of things you can do to lower cholesterol. I was on a quest and determined to get it down so I would not have to take the prescribed pills. Plus, my doctor really did not want me to take them either as they can cause other problems. I talked to my acupuncturist, Lan Kao, and she recommended eating an apple about a half an hour after meals. I did so after dinner. I also starting drinking Mamaki tea- you can get it at Longs. It is a Hawaiian herbal tea that has been shown to reduce cholesterol and high blood pressure. I drank it with meals.
I ate oatmeal for breakfast and took high quality Lecithin and Omega 3 Fatty Acids supplements (ask me for information on these- we sell them). I replaced dairy products with soy products, cut out red meat and really watched my fat intake. I also used olive oil or ghee (clarified butter) for cooking. I thought about every time I put something in my mouth as to whether it was low in fat and cholesterol. If it wasn't I didn't eat it. I also was walking and exercising a lot more. Did it all work?
Yes! In only one month I got my cholesterol down to 176. My doctor and I were both amazed. Is my cholesterol still 176? No, but it is still at a manageable level and I will continue to monitor it and adjust my diet and lifestyle to find the perfect limits to keep me in check, but not feeling like I have to deprive myself all the time. I am getting ready for another blood test this month and will see how I am doing.
Please consult with your physician before you decide to use any of these methods or go off medications. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call (262-3700) and I would be happy to talk about what I did to lower my cholesterol and take control of my health.
