Why do we become unhealthy or get sick? Is it genetics, lifestyle, emotional or spiritual causes, or just the luck of the draw? Maybe it's a little of all of those factors. I see myself as a relatively healthy person. I have had my bouts of various health problems but nothing life threatening. Would I say that I was lucky? No, because dis-ease is not necessarily a bad thing. When we go through a health crisis we are given an opportunity to heal, and it's not always on the physical level. We become conscious of our bodies, then on a deeper level our souls.
Is it necessary for us all to have a health crisis to get in touch with our spirit? No, other times we have other experiences just as remarkable which move us to a different level of understanding and sacredness. I believe there is a mindfulness or an awareness of a higher self that is constantly connecting with us, giving us messages to help us through the difficult times. This is the part of ourselves that is ready to burst through with all the joy and happiness we could ever imagine. When acknowledged, this part of ourselves answers our questions, and there comes a deep sense of peace, regardless of our physical and/or emotional situation.
It is a journey that we are constantly on as we try to heal ourselves and find meaning and purpose in our lives. I have sensed this journey since childhood. I have made many mistakes, and hurt myself as well as others. Many of my challenges stem from living with the trauma and drama of having a father who was physically and mentally disabled since I was 17. I lost a sense of stability when my family became fragmented and shattered over a devastating illness. In my life, I have suffered emotionally more than physically.
Despite these challenges, I have always been grateful for all the love that was given to me throughout my life, reminding me of that higher power from whom this love flows. One of the turning points for me was when I took Reiki in 1997. I was ready to delve a little deeper when I met my Reiki Master Maureen O'Shaughnessy. She talked about a healing energy that was universal and there for all. How could I not want to learn this miraculous technique? After taking Reiki I was able to work on myself, channeling this divine energy to every part of my being. As I practiced, I watched myself unfold. I let go of past hurts and embraced a new positive future that continues to unfold everyday. I went to massage school shortly after that and then Liza found her way into my life through our Reiki connection.
Is my life perfect now? No, but I am more at peace. I still make mistakes, but I feel I am learning more about myself than I ever have and am more willing to work on the things that are not working for me. My heart is full of love for all and my purpose, which I sense is everyone's, is to channel this love. Now is the time for all of us look into our hearts and acknowledge our dis-ease- whatever now calls out for some attention. Ask yourself what you may need to bring into your life to bring you peace? Remember, we are more than just a body.
