The word Reiki has two parts, "Rei" and "Ki". "Ki" refers to our individual life force energy. The amount of Ki we each possess and the ease with which it flows could be seen as a measure of our vitality, our overall health. For most, the concept of Ki is fairly straight forward.
But what about the Rei? The aspect of Rei has been described as the life force energy which flows through and around all living things. Another way to describe it is the soup we live in. My Reiki Master Maureen and I both use the analogy of the Far Side comic strip with two little fish swimming in the ocean. One fish says to the other "What's this ocean they are all talking about?".
Recently my students have begun to describe the Rei for me, and I would like to allow them to share their experiences with you in a series of articles. The first story is from one my First Degree Reiki students, who experienced the following the last day of her first degree Reiki class:
"During my final initiation, I felt love and happiness begin to spread first from my hands, then throughout my entire body. Then the energy expanded beyond my physical body, forming a cocoon of love and happiness all around me. All of a sudden it expanded dramatically into the universe. The expansion continued without end, with no dissipation as it traveled farther away from me.
I can compare this experience to the enlightenment sought by Buddhists, except that Buddhism describes this process as more mental, whereas I experience Reiki in my heart, and am touched all the more deeply by it."
Mahalo for sharing your experience of the Rei with me- Liza
