Craniosacral Therapy

| Liza and Kathy were off island May 9-16 learning the second level of Craniosacral Therapy.
Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch therapy which uses delicate manipulations to free up restrictions in the connective tissue lining the spine and cranium. Extremely relaxing, the technique uses only 5 grams of pressure (the weight of a nickel) and is helpful for a wide variety of conditions.
These include:

Curing or Healing?
|
Most people who come to us for massage hope that it will help soothe their muscles and relieve aches and pains. Commonly, people hold their stress in their neck and shoulders, and actually create pockets of pain without intending to. If we relax the muscles, but the underlying stress is still there, have we addressed the problem? We don't think so, and this is why we are called Rainbow Healing Arts and not Rainbow Curing Arts.
What is the difference between curing and healing? We live in a culture which encourages a quick fix for any problems or discomfort. Have recurring headaches? Take more medicine. We attract many clients who ask if you can cure their dis-ease. Can you cure my cancer? Will Craniosacral Therapy make my back pain go away? In how many sessions? Will Reiki make my depression go away?
These questions are quite valid, and we strive to provide information about the track record of the modalities we use for particular conditions. Our belief, though, is that as healers, all we can do is help facilitate healing. The actual balancing is done by your system, body mind and spirit. Healing is thus a totally individualized process and not as predictable as the scientific method would proscribe.
For example, we recently began treatments for a woman who was rear-ended and has a number of free sessions through no-fault insurance. She came to us for her neck injury. After her first treatment of Craniosacral Therapy, she reports that her neck is about the same, but she had her period 10 days early and with absolutely no symptoms for the first time in many years. Was she cured instantaneously of her neck ache? No. Did she experience healing? Yes.
In addition, we work with people wholistically, since healing always occurs on all levels, not just the physical. For example, Kathy is a gifted listener and counselor, and many of her clients report that the talking they do during sessions is just as important as the actual muscle work. Finally, we believe that the Reiki energy is the single most effective tool we possess to solve imbalances at their source, so we both use Reiki during every session we provide. | LIZA'S STORY: PART 5 |
After graduating from U.H. with a Masters in Public Health, I began work at the Life Foundation in January 1998 as their Volunteer Coordinator. Meanwhile, I became increasingly involved with Reiki. I began attending Maureen's weekly Reiki Exchange, and started auditing more and more Reiki classes. I even sponsored another class for Maureen to teach at the Life Foundation. It was clear to me that I was becoming a „Reiki Junkie‰, but I still didn't dare ask Maureen about apprenticing with her to become a Reiki Master. I didn't feel I was worthy.
By the November of 1998, I was fairly worn out from my human services work. I called Maureen and asked her to come over and give me the Reiki treatment she had gifted me for my birthday in March. I lay on my bed as she worked on me, and it felt so good! Toward the end of the treatment, I heard myself asking her if I could apprentice with her. It was sort of like an out of body experience, since I had not at all planned on bringing it up. Maureen said she was not at all surprised, and of course she would be delighted to begin the process with me. I was so excited when she left I couldn't believe it!
My apprenticeship was a year and three months of soul-searching, practicing Reiki on myself, and attending Reiki classes as much as I could. I was extremely busy, and to top it off, having a really hard time at work due to some staffing issues. I began to apply for a series of jobs in Public Health. For each job, I was qualified, had excellent references , interviewed well, and was turned down. Finally, in exasperation, I gave up, and decided to trust that there was something else out there for me.
When I let go of trying to get a job, things immediately improved at work, and I could concentrate on preparations for my trip to Africa to visit my mom in October of 1999. My trip was an intense and wonderful experience, and I was off island for an entire month. The day after I arrived home, I suddenly knew I needed to quit my job and go into business with Kathy. Kathy had just gotten her massage license, and had been telling me for months „I'm going to take you with me‰. Somehow, I thought she meant I too would find a job I loved. Now it all made perfect sense. I gave 3 months notice at work, and started to plan Rainbow Healing Arts with Kathy! Despite the challenges of this first year in business, I would not give up the experience for anything! Thank you again Reiki!!!
